Ruth – Week 1, Saturday

Saturday, September 24

Read: Judges 19 – 21

Today’s readings paint a stark and brutal picture of Israel.  How are these horrible stories (violence, immorality, anarchy, war…) similar to the stories of today, perhaps even of people you know?  How are they different?

Ruth – Week 1, Friday

Friday, September 23

Read: Judges 16 – 18

The phrase, “In those days Israel had no king.” (Jug. 17:6, 18:1) is repeated throughout the book of Judges.  What did it mean for ancient Israel?  What does it mean for us today?  In what areas of your life are you “doing as you see fit” rather than submitting to the kingship of God?

Ruth – Week 1, Thursday

Thursday, September 22

Read: Judges 13 – 15

Decipher the following riddle and plan to do as it says with your entire family:

Following Friday, before twenty-five
Nine a.m. sharp and looking alive
Be in the park of Heritage Square
To honor our town with works and care

Ruth – Week 1, Wednesday

Wednesday, September 21

Read: Judges 10 – 12

Jephthah was an Israelite outcast who became a judge during a time when Israel was at war with itself.  Have you ever been ostracized from a group?  Alternatively, have you been part of a group of friends/family/co-workers that was fighting with each other?  What happened?  What advice would you give?

Ruth – Week 1, Tuesday

Tuesday, September 20

Read: Judges 7 – 9

Now compare Gideon (Jerub-Baal) to his son, Abimelech.  How are they similar to each other?  How are they different?  Today or tomorrow, call someone who is at least 20 years older or younger than you and decide to meet for a coffee or a walk.  Ask them to share their faith story then tell them yours.

Use the comment link below to tell us how this experience was for you.

Ruth – Week 1, Monday

Monday, September 19

Read: Judges 4-6

Compare Deborah and Gideon as judges.  How are they similar to each other?  How are they different?  To whom do you relate more?  Why?  What daunting task are you currently facing?

Ruth – Week 1, Sunday

Judging A Book By It’s Characters: Exploring Ruth

The book of Judges offers context to the book of Ruth.  Commit to reading Judges this week.  That’s 3 chapters per day.

Sunday, September 18

Read: Judges 1-3

In the first three chapters of Judges, look for the phrase, “then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD…”  What is happening in the preceding verse(s) that leads Israel astray?  What about your own life?  What specifically leads you into doing evil?
